About Nicky and Chris

Nicky Stevenson

Nicky Stevenson is renown for her unique sense of humour and sense of the ridiculous. Believing one has a duty to remain optimistic, she creates exquisitely drawn images, full of detail, beautifully composed with wonderful colour, inspired by everyday life, literature and many cultures.

Nicky studied Ceramics BA Hons at Middlesex University graduating in 1986. She worked in theatres as Head of Props and a Designer and ran her own design, scenery building and prop-making business “The Prop Shop” until1992.

A move to Holland gave her the opportunity to paint full-time. Nicky’s 3D background is seen in her 2D work. Many people think her paintings are painstakingly quilted, but on closer view see that her work is a clever use of traditional techniques- line, shadow, form that has allowed the surface to look 3 dimensional.

Nicky says that when she paints it is as if she is sculpting the shapes and forms with clay, excepting that she is doing it with a paintbrush on paper!

Nicky has had a strong association with Brixham since her parents moved to the area in 1978.Nicky moved to Brixham herself in 1998, and lives with her daughters and Horace and Hec-Two, the Shih-tzus.

Chris Slack

Chris Slack’s passion for photography began in his youth, and was greatly encouraged by his art loving parents.

A move to Brixham in the late eighties inspired him to pursue his hobby as a career. His love of the sea, its different moods, the sunrise and sunset, the landscape of Devon and its light have given him a burning passion to create incredible imagery using his camera. His determination to capture the right photograph and to achieve the correct composition has led him to be in some quite precarious situations, dangling off tree branches, neck deep in snow!

Chris now has an amazing portfolio of images including tempestuous seas, tranquil and romantic sunsets and sunrises, Brixham’s Heritage Trawler Fleet, the heroic R.N.L.I and beautifully composed local scenes.
